Pakistan's agricultural sector continues to suffer significant losses due to inadequate storage, processing and packaging facilities, limiting its export potential despite strong production capacity.

During a high-level meeting, Haroon Akhtar Khan engaged with representatives of Kisan Ittehad to address key structural challenges facing the sector. Officials from the Ministry of Industries and Production and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) also participated.

Participants highlighted that a substantial portion of fruits and vegetables is lost due to the absence of modern preservation and packaging systems. The lack of food processing, value addition and cold storage infrastructure was identified as a major constraint on agricultural output and export competitiveness.

Officials emphasised that improving value addition and adopting modern packaging techniques could significantly enhance export performance. The role of SMEDA was underscored in equipping farmers and exporters with updated skills and technologies.

The discussion also pointed to broader gaps in the agricultural value chain. Limited cold chain infrastructure and insufficient processing capacity were cited as contributing to financial losses for producers and reduced efficiency across the sector.

Attention was also given to the fisheries segment, where increased investment in aquaculture technology and cold storage systems was deemed essential to unlock growth potential.

The meeting concluded with directions for SMEDA to collaborate with stakeholders in developing a comprehensive policy framework. Emphasis was placed on strengthening quality control and building a recognisable export brand to improve Pakistan's standing in global agricultural and fisheries markets.
