United Insurance Moves to Create a Branchless Digital Life Insurer, Pending Regulatory Approval

One of Pakistan's insurance groups is betting that customers will buy life cover without setting foot in a branch. The board of The United Insurance Company of Pakistan Limited (UIC) has approved the formation of United Digital Life Insurance Company, according to an announcement by its parent, United International Group (UIG). The new firm plans to sell life policies entirely through digital channels, though it cannot proceed until it secures all regulatory and legal approvals.

The proposed company would operate without branches, delivering services to customers at their doorstep through digital means. It intends to offer a range of coverage options and products tailored to individual needs, according to the group.

UIG describes the venture as an important milestone. It says the move reflects a strategy of expanding in insurance and financial services through digital innovation and a focus on customers' requirements. The group also presents the new company as a way to strengthen its position in a changing insurance market. Its stated aim is to make cover more accessible through technology-driven products, a model that depends on customers being willing to buy financial protection online.

Mian M. A. Shahid, chairman of UIG and chief executive of UIC, said he was confident the initiative would open new avenues for growth and innovation. He added that it would reinforce the group's contribution to the insurance and financial-services sector.

For now, the plan remains at an early stage. The announcement did not disclose the new company's capital, launch date or target market size. Those details, together with the outcome of the regulatory process, will determine whether United Digital Life becomes a meaningful player or remains an ambition on paper.
