Islamabad: Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council to unequivocally reject and condemn the attacks against Iran since the 13th of this month, which are in clear contravention of international law and the UN Charter.
According to Radio Pakistan, the call was made by Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, in a statement delivered at the UN Security Council meeting in New York. Expressing solidarity with the government and people of Iran during this challenging time, the Ambassador also urged that the Security Council should denounce the attacks on IAEA-safeguarded nuclear facilities, which violate Security Council and IAEA resolutions, as well as international humanitarian law.
He stated that as the body entrusted with primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, the UN Security Council must act urgently and decisively. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar emphasized that these attacks set a dangerous precedent and pose a grave threat to the safety and security of populations across the region and indeed the world.
The Ambassador highlighted the need for the UN Security Council to promote urgent recourse to dialogue and diplomacy, consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, to find a peaceful and lasting resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue. He noted that Pakistan, China, and Russia have proposed a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the region.
The resolution also urged all parties to refrain from further escalation and demanded the urgent protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. It supported a diplomatic path forward on the Iranian nuclear issue that is acceptable to all parties.
During the session, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community to act immediately to halt the fighting and return to negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme.
