Turkmenistan’s president wins seven-year term with nearly 98% of vote

Ashgabat (IINA) � President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, who has ruled the country since 2006, bagged a fresh seven-year term with nearly 98 percent of vote, Turkmenistan’s Election Commission announced Monday following a preliminary count.

The commission claimed at a press conference in the capital Ashgabat a turnout of over 97 percent for Sunday’s presidential election, in which eight other candidates also competed.
