PPI Original Text (PPI-OT) – Indonesia ratifies Pakistan Telecommunication Authority with Pakistan Visa-free trade access must for boosting bilateral trade – Ehtesham

Karachi, May 30, 2012 (PPI-OT): Indonesia will support Pakistan’s bid for permanent inclusion in ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations), this was stated by Consul General of Indonesia, Rossalis Rusman Adenan here on Wednesday. In a meeting with the Chairman and office bearers of Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) the Indonesian diplomat said that the Indonesia supports Pakistan to become full dialogue member of ASEAN but some countries oppose it.

PTA (Preferential Trade Agreement) between the two brotherly countries has been finalized and Indonesia has already ratified it, however the business community of both the countries should ask their respective governments for an early implementation of the agreement so that manufacturers should get the benefit of preferential tariffs. Rossalis said that the volume of bilateral trade between the two countries is not over $1.5 billion however it may be double after realisation of PTA.

He further said that trade volume of Indonesia and Pakistan is still below to its potential. He said that Pakistan would be importing palm oil at cheaper price than other countries after the PTA. Businessmen of the two countries should be encouraged to increase their contact for mutually benefited business relations.

He invited the Pakistani businessmen to participate in Tradexpo Indonesia 2012 being held in Jakarta in October this year. He said that this event would play a major role in boosting bilateral trade. He said that about 60 exhibitors participated in Tradexpo Indonesia and a bigger number of participants are expected to participate from Pakistan this year.

The Chairman KATI, Ehtesham Uddin said that Indonesia could be role model for Pakistan as it has achieved a rapid growth in exports. He advised Pakistani manufacturers to look to the East now instead of struggling for US and EU markets.

He said that Pakistan is keen to join the ASEAN and is looking forward to Indonesian support for becoming a full dialogue partner of South East Asia’s strongest organization of economic cooperation.

The Chairman of KATI’s Diplomatic Affairs’ Standing Committee, Masood Naqi emphasised that bilateral relationship should be boosted and avenues be chalked out for a more productive relationship. He urged the Pakistan and Indonesia agreements on abolition of diplomatic and official visas, paving way for stronger and effective trade relations.
