PASSCO to procure 1.3 MT wheat in Punjab and Sindh

LAHORE –– Federal Minister for Food & Agriculture, Mir Israrullah Zehri said that the federal government will ensure a transparent and just wheat procurement to encourage the farming community whose efforts have resulted into a bumper wheat production in the country. The federal minister was addressing a press conference on April 23, 2011.

Farmers will be protected from the exploitation of the middlemen to achieve the true spirit of intervention by the government. Small farmers must be specifically facilitated in all the possible ways.  We expect a bumper wheat crop this year and the credit goes to the farming community of this country. PASSCO has completed the required arrangements to procure wheat from the farmers, said the minister.

Mr. Zehri added that a complaint cell to respond to farmers’ complaints has already been established at the ministry and one such cell would also be operational at the PASSCO headquarters though out the procurement season. The minister said that he would be frequently visiting the procurement centres once PASSCO starts purchasing wheat in the last week of this month. He said that wheat production of more than 24 MT is reported to be achieved this year.

Mir Israrullah Zehri further said “Increase in wheat production will have a positive impact on our GDP. Farmers are the real stake holders in agriculture and they would be facilitated to the maximum possible level.

The federal minister was briefed by MD PASSCO Maj. Gen. Sohail Shafqat all the general managers were also present. MD showed his comprehensive strategy to facilitate the common farmer. The farmers will be charged 105 Rs. For bardana which will be returned when the farmers returned the filled bags. The minister asked the PASSCO administration to devise a transparent system for the procurement of 1.3ton wheat across Pakistan.
