Pakistan committed to promote economic integration with Iran: Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh

Islamabad: Advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh says Pakistan is committed to promote economic integration with Iran. Talking to Iranian news agency IRNA here, he said Pakistan has embarked on a policy of promoting trade, economic, political and business relations with its neighbours and obviously Iran is “very important” neighbour of Pakistan. “We are tied together in bonds of history geography and desire of our leadership. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani want to promote economic integration in the region especially with Iran,” he said.

Highlighting importance of February 16-17, 2012 Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan trilateral summit in Islamabad, Dr Sheikh said it has brought Afghanistan into a stream line which is another very important neighbour with whom Pakistan has just signed a historic transit trade agreement.

“We are trying to promote connectivity with Iran and Afghanistan. Our focus is on developing projects in energy, promoting transport communication links and exploring avenues for doing our joint ventures as well as enhancing exports from our side,” he said. Iranian investors are welcomed in Pakistan and “we are trying to promote a business to business dialogue so that economic ties flourish.”
