Malaysian Company constructing Motorway M9 asks NHA to hand over project area by March

ISLAMABAD: Chairman NHA has said that M/s Bina Puri, the Malaysian Company constructing Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway, has asked NHA to hand over project area of M9 by March, 2012 so as construction activity could be initiated. Project will cost 25 billion and will be realized in 3years. After completion Bena Puri Holding will receive its money from toll tax in 25Years.

Chairman NHA Syed Muhammad Ali Gardezi stated this while briefing the NHA Executive Board Meeting held here on Thursday.

Syed Muhammad Ali Gardezi expressed satisfaction over the prevailing conducive environment for foreign investment in the country.

Chairman told the board that two companies had given their proposals for the construction of M9 project. Proposal of EOBI was ignored on the grounds that its parent Ministry, Ministry of Human Resource Development HRD, conveyed NHA that EOBI does not have any mandate to undertake such Motorway construction projects. So the proposal of M/s Bina Puri was accepted on merits.

Syed Muhammad Ali Gardezi imparted Executive Board Members that NHA has received another Rs.3 billion out of PSDP allocations and it is satisfying that NHA has cleared all the liabilities of the contractors. NHA is also striving to complete liabilities of Maintenance Projects particularly in Sindh and Baluchistan, which have decreased remarkably, he added. This will help improve condition of roads in the coming days, he told.

Executive Board also accorded approval for award of work to M/s SKB for construction of Syedwala Bridge over River Ravi. The bridge will cost more than Rs.892 million. 2 km approach road on right side and 1.5 km road on left side are also included in the project.

The Board approved construction of 8 km 6Lane Road from Double Phattak to Nag Shah Chowk in Multan as per new design. The project will be completed at an approximate cost of Rs.4.5 billion. This road will provide link between Faisalabad-Multan Motorway M4 & G.T Road.

Board was told that work on roads damaged by earthquake is also in progress with the financial assistance of World Bank. In this regard 25 km road from Batgram to Thakot is completed while major portion of 44 km Basian-Balakot-Naran Road has also been completed. Likewise work on Muzaffarabad Chakothi Road is also in progress.

The meeting also reviewed the environmental impact of construction activity in this area and stressed upon to maintain its natural beauties and lush green milieu. The meeting also accorded approval for obtaining consultancy services for flood emergency construction project in Northern parts of the country.

Members of the NHA Executive Board congratulated Rana Asad Amin Additional Secretary Ministry of Finance on his promotion and commended the services as Member of Executive Board. The Board also welcomed Abdul Khaliq, Additional Secretary Ministry of Finance, as new member to the Board. Senior officers from Ministry of Finance, Planning Commission, Ministry of Communications, NH&MP, NTRC, NESPAK and NHA attended the meeting.
