Higher Education Commission hopes for Release of Funds

Islamabad, June 08, 2012 (PPI-OT): Despite high-level intervention, the finance ministry continues to withhold the 12.824 billion (4th Quarter amount) pledged to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for its budget to be released to the Universities for payment of salaries to 71 public sector universities and Development Projects.

There are 149 Development Projects in progress at various public sector Universities out of which 48 Development projects are near its completion. Necessary equipment’s from various firms have been purchased against these projects and bills are pending due to non-availability of funds.

This is an alarming situation which will also affect the studies of Scholars studying at national and international Universities.

Even in such a grave situation, we are still hopeful that the Government will release the 4th Quarter amounting 12.824 billion to HEC.

Because, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Federal Finance Minister in his speech at 10th Meeting of the Vice-Chancellors’ Committee of Public and Private Sector Universities/ Institutes held on 26th March, 2012, has appreciated the performance of the Higher Education Commission for the promotion of higher education sector during the last decade, saying that investment in the higher education has resulted in the generation of employment, initiation of research relevant to socio-economic needs and meeting industry requirements.

On that occasion, he reiterated that the financial commitments made to HEC, both on the recurring and development side will be honoured by the Government.

We hope that Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Federal Finance Minister will honour his words, spokesperson of HEC said.
