ECNEC approves nine Sindh projects

Karachi: The ECNEC meeting held Thursday approved nearly 50 projects, including 9 projects in Sindh worth about Rs 95 billion. Finance Minister Dr Hafeez Shaikh chaired the meeting. Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah, advisor to Chief Minister for Planning and Development Dr Kaiser Bengali and ACS (Dev) Ishaq Lashari represented Sindh at the meeting. The main projects in Sindh approved included Rs 27 billion Makhi Farash Irrigation and Water Supply project that was critical to the development of Thar Coal. Murad Ali Shah and Kaiser Bengali argued Thar Coal was not a Sindh project, but of national importance, given that it would supply electricity to the entire country and should be treated as par with Bhasha Dam in terms of its national importance. Irrigation and road projects, worth over Rs 43 billion to be financed from the ADB were also approved. Dr Bengali termed the meeting as very positive and successful.
