Annual Energy Saving of over 866,000 KWh through SMEDA-JICA Energy Efficiency Management Project (EEMP)

Lahore, December 08, 2016 (PPI-OT): The Energy Efficiency Management Project (EEMP) of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has enabled 13 industrial units selected from the Automotive and Foundry Sector to save 866,00 KWh energy per annum valuing about Rs. 10 million. It was disclosed at a seminar held by SMEDA today to share results of two-year interventions of the Project at a local hotel. Mr. Yasuhiro TOJO, Chief Representative of JICA Pakistan office was Chief Guest of the Seminar, which was also addressed by Mr. Haroon Ahmad Khan, GM-SMEDA for Business and Sector Development, Mr. Ashfaq Ahmad, Head, Industry Support Department SMEDA, Mr. Mashhood Ahmad Khan, Chairman Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Association (PAAPAM), Mr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman PAAPAM’s Skill Development Centre and Mr. Abdul Rashid, Secretary Pakistan Foundry Association. Whereas, Mr. Morihito Taka Yama, Senior Japanese Energy Expert gave a detailed presentation on the results and impact of EEMP on the selected SMEs.

Mr. Yasuhiro, Chief Representative, JICA Pakistan Office informed about various initiatives taken by JICA towards SME development in Pakistan. He told that on request of SMEDA, Ministry of Industries and Production, Government of Pakistan, JICA dispatched 4 Energy Experts in March 2015 for technical assistance to reduce energy inefficiencies in the Auto Parts and Foundry sectors of Pakistan.

The prime objective of the project was to reduce Energy inefficiencies at SMEs’ workplaces by introducing Japanese Energy Conservation Tools and Methodologies and Management Practices, he said and informed that as a result of the project’s field activities, considerable amount of energy savings had been realized by implementing improvement plans suggested by JICA Energy Experts both in the fields of electrical and mechanical. So far annual energy savings of over 866,000 KWh has been realized out of the total identified potential of 1,3527,27 KWh, he said and offered full support of JICA also in future for development of SMEs Industrial Sectors of Pakistan.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Haroon Ahmed Khan, General Manager, B and SDS Division SMEDA appreciated the utmost support of JICA and effective cooperation of trade associations for making the project a real success.

Earlier, Mr. Ashfaq Ahmed, Deputy General Manager, Industry Support Cell informed that since March 2015, SMEDA, under the guidance of JICA Energy Experts the Best Energy Management Practices in 13 industrial units both in Punjab and Sindh Regions had been introduced and during this process of over one and 9 months detailed Energy Audits were conducted in these 13 industrial units focusing on various areas of energy wastages including Compressors, Casting, Injection Moulding, Press/Forging, Generators, lighting etc. were identified and improvement plan suggested accordingly by the JICA Experts Team. Solutions have also been provided for effective management of power factor, cables’ selection, inverter applications and controlling harmonics to these industrial units.

Mr. Morihito Takayama, Team Leader of JICA Energy Experts gave a detailed presentation on the project activities focusing on Electrical Technology and subsequent improvement approaches to overcome the on-floor wastages of energy. Another Japanese Energy Expert Hirayama highlighted the key findings about Thermal Technology and Lighting Systems. He also underlined key features of Best Practices Manual prepared as part of project activities. The fellow Japanese Energy Expert Fukushima presented details about energy saving potential in Compressors along with Cooling Tower and Generator Technology.
While concluding the Dissemination Seminars, Mr. Mashood Ali Khan Chairman PAAPAM, Mr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman PAAPAM Skill Development Centre and Mr. Abdul Rashid, Secretary PFA highly valued SMEDA-JICA project and also showed their interest for similar initiatives in future.

Meanwhile Mr. Abdul Rahim Soomro, Secretary to Department of Industries and Commerce, Sindh has appreciated SMEDA for including Sindh’s SMEs in EEM Project and offered full support of his department to SMEDA in SMEs Development initiatives.
