Pakistan is preparing to auction 600 MHz spectrum next month in a move that authorities say could sharply expand mobile internet capacity and address persistent connectivity gaps, a step seen as pivotal for the country's digital transformation. Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Federal Minister for IT and Telecom, announced the plan while addressing the Indus AI Week Conference at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She said the auction would enable faster, more reliable internet services, easing access constraints and strengthening online platforms. The initiative is expected to support the growth of digital services, including e-commerce and e-governance, by improving network quality. Officials believe enhanced bandwidth will help reduce service disruptions while expanding access for users across the country. Alongside infrastructure upgrades, the government is pursuing broader measures to promote the technology sector. The minister highlighted ongoing efforts to attract investment through regulatory reform s and globally aligned policies aimed at boosting confidence in Pakistan's IT and artificial intelligence landscape. A key component of this strategy is the 'Smartphone for All' policy, designed to widen access to digital tools. Authorities also plan to reskill and upskill one million individuals in artificial intelligence, targeting youth, women, and professionals to meet emerging labour market demands. Digital governance and security remain central to the agenda. The government is introducing frameworks for cybersecurity, data protection, and responsible technology use, seeking to build trust among businesses and consumers alike. Efforts are also under way to expand digital infrastructure, including fibre networks and payment systems. Officials argue that a shift towards a cashless economy could lower transaction costs, support small and medium enterprises, and improve financial transparency. At the same event, the Lahore Chamber launched an online membership portal, becoming the first chamber in the co untry to offer such services. The platform aims to simplify business registration and improve collaboration among firms. Business leaders at the conference stressed the importance of adopting artificial intelligence across industries. They argued that integrating modern technologies into supply chains, manufacturing, and financial systems is essential for maintaining global competitiveness. The convergence of spectrum expansion, digital skills development, and regulatory reform signals a coordinated attempt to position Pakistan's economy within an increasingly technology-driven global marketplace.
