Prime Minister sets committee to work out mechanism to bring agri inputs price escalation within justified limits
Islamabad: Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani set up seven-member committee to work out mechanism for bringing price escalation of agriculture inputs within justified limits. It will submit recommendations within a week.
He directed Finance team to prepare fair mechanism of sales tax on agriculture inputs to redress farmers’ difficulties. Ministers of Water & Power, Petroleum & Natural Resources, State Minister of Finance, MNAs Nazar Muhammad Gondal Punjab, Nawab Yusuf Talpur Sindh, Noor Alam Khan Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Amir Ali Magsi Balochistan will be members of committee.
Gilani chairing meeting of Parliamentarians Thursday at Parliament House said government believed in deciding matters, policies by collective wisdom. “Despite number of formidable challenges in last three years, we successfully turned challenges into opportunity which speaks of exemplary resilience and courage of the government.”
He said economy was agro-based and government fully sensitized on interests of subsistence farmers. He asked committee to investigate, recommend measures against undue increase in fertilizers, pesticides, agriculture machinery prices.
Finance Minister Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh said food, health, education, agricultural produce were exempted from Sales Tax. All causes of price hike of agriculture inputs were discussed in-depth at meeting.
