Pakistan's information technology sector is approaching another milestone as freelance earnings near US$1 billion, while the emergence of Lahore on a global innovation ranking signals the country's expanding presence in the international digital economy despite its relatively low global profile. According to figures from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), Pakistani freelancers earned approximately US$959 million during the first ten months ending in April, placing the sector on course to exceed the US$1 billion mark for the first time.

The growth in freelance earnings has been accompanied by broader expansion in the country's technology exports. During the first nine months of the current fiscal year, Pakistan's total information technology exports reached US$3.39 billion, reflecting the increasing contribution of digital services to the national economy. The country's freelance workforce has also expanded significantly. More than 2.37 million registered freelancers are now providing digital services from cities including Lahore, Karachi and Faisalabad, working for international clients, earning in foreign currency and remitting those earnings to Pakistan.

Alongside the growth in exports and freelance activity, Pakistan also achieved a notable milestone in innovation. Lahore appeared on the World Intellectual Property Organisation's (WIPO) list of global innovation clusters for the first time, joining Islamabad on the international ranking. The twin developments-record freelance earnings and international recognition for one of Pakistan's technology hubs-highlight the continued expansion of the country's digital economy as technology exports and freelance services become increasingly important sources of foreign exchange.
