Women farmers to get 50,000 acres land by December

Karachi –– Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on April 16, 2011 announced that 50,000 acres of land would be distributed among landless women farmers in Sindh by December this year.

He said while inaugurating the balloting of 4,000 subsidized tractors for Sindh peasants at the Chief Minister House. Federal Minister for Labour and Manpower Syed Khurshid Shah and Sindh Minister for Agriculture Ali Nawaz Shah were also present. Ceremony was also attended by provincial assembly members and advisors.

Government has provided subsidy of Rs300,000 on each large tractor and Rs200,000 on each small tractors. On the special directives of President Asif Zardari, 20% of total 4,000 tractors – accounts to 800 – would be given to women farmers as an incentive for their better prospect in farming, the CM said.

Qaim Shah said that total 46,000 applications were received for balloting of 4,000 tractors. He said 5,000 subsidized tractors had been given to peasants last year; however, government would endeavour to entertain more peasants next year through the scheme.

Sindh Chief Executive said the present government has carried out various developments in the agriculture sector to streamline it. Initiatives have also been taken to improve living standard of peasants in the province. Poverty level has nosedived especially in the interior Sindh owing to the steps taken by the government, he claimed.
