United States Consulate team visits Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry and discuss Generalized System of Preferences Scheme

Islamabad, February 26, 2013 (PPI-OT): Shaikh Haroon Rashid, Vice President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has appreciated the US Consulate’s efforts to educate the business community of the country through the organisation of interactive seminars in collaboration with FPCCI.

He said this while welcoming a team from the Consulate General of the United States in Karachi, which visited the FPCCI Head Office to give a presentation on Expanding Pakistan’s Exports to USA through the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) scheme.

The visit was held as a follow-up to the US Consul General’s visit to FPCCI earlier this year, when members of the business community had expressed the desire to learn more about market access to the United States.

Shaikh Haroon Rashid informed the participants that the United States is by far Pakistan’s single largest export market, taking 16% of Pakistan’s total exports. Pakistan exports annually almost $3-4 billion worth of goods to the United States, and over 90% of exports are in the textile and apparel sector. On the other hand, Pakistani exporters are using only about 10% of the items from the list of around 3,500 products which are allowed duty free in US market under the GSP scheme.

The United States imported US$2.98 billion worth of textiles in 2011-12, which was 24.1% of total Pakistan’s textile exports. However, these exports were equivalent to only 3% percent of total US textile imports of $100.93 billion.

In her presentation, Ms. Kara Babrowski mentioned that Pakistan was eligible for duty-free access to several products under the GSP scheme, but low levels of awareness about GSP meant that there was meager utilization of the duty free trade access facility and the overall GSP utilization rate was 82%.

She listed jewelry, some agricultural products, chemicals, minerals, carpets, and manufactured items which qualified for GSP access. She briefed the participants about how to apply for GSP status for their product. She also provided the participants with useful reference material which they could find helpful in increasing their awareness on the subject, and also encouraged them to study her presentation in detail.

The meeting was very well attended by members of the business community desirous of learning how to improve their exports to the American market. The meeting concluded with presentation of the FPCCI Crest to Ms. Babrowski.
