Union of Small and Medium Enterprises welcomes cash support schemes announced by government for product development, technology up gradation

Karachi, July 04, 2016 (PPI-OT): The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) welcomed the Cash Support Schemes (CSS) announced by the government through 5 SROs for product development, technology up gradation, import of machinery for agro processing and grants for branding and certification for the fans, home appliances, rice, cutlery and sports goods for the SME units located in specified areas.

President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said the union appreciates the steps taken by the ministry of commerce (MINCOM) in recommending the incentives but said the sector needs more support to increase exports and be competitive in the face of global challenges.

Thaver said MINCOM has rightly identified the sectors and appreciates the support announced but this meager support will not enhance exports and MINCOM needs to examine the reasons for decline in exports and take steps accordingly.

The union chief pointed out the shortcomings of the Strategic Export Policy Framework (SEPF) and said it has inherent defects which need to be resolved if the MINCOM really means to uplift the sector in the golden triangle of Punjab and other parts of the country diligently.

The SROs announced are cumbersome and will be difficult to implement. They are not well aligned and are tailored badly.

UNISAME urged MINCOM to review the intended support and redesign it well for boosting exports by making the SME units competitive.
