UK reaffirms support for ongoing economic reforms

ISLAMABAD: Minister of Finance, Abdul Hafeez Shaikh Tuesday held a roundtable session with visiting British Secretary of State for International Development, Andrew Mitchell.

Senior officials of the British government and DFID Pakistan accompanied the British Secretary of State.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Finance and Economic Affairs Ms Hina Rabbani Khar and senior officials of the government were also present at the occasion.

The British Secretary of State appreciated Pakistan’s commitment for sustaining the ongoing economic reforms and reaffirmed UK’s support to Pakistan in this regards.

He appreciated the recent measures implemented to mobilise domestic resources, rationalise expenditures and reform the energy sector. Mitchell expressed his hope Pakistan would continue the reform process for achieving macroeconomic stability and high growth.

He said under the new Operational Plan 2011-15 for Pakistan, UK had committed almost £1.4 billon of development assistance for poverty reduction, health, education and governance.

He hoped UK Pakistan development cooperation would enhance in the future and Pakistan could become the highest recipient of UK’s assistance by the year 2015.

He also announced £60 million for the Citizens Damages Compensation Programme.
