UK calls for immediate release of two Reuters reporters in Myanmar
Britain has called for immediate release of two Reuters journalists imprisoned by a Myanmar court for reporting on the atrocities targeting Rohingya Muslim minority in the country.
British Prime Minister Theresa May’s spokesman said in London that in any democracy, journalists must be free to carry out their job without fear or intimidation.
He said this verdict has undermined freedom of the media in Myanmar.
Meanwhile, seventy-six civil society groups in Myanmar have also called for the release of Reuters reporters denouncing their conviction as an assault on the right to freedom of information.
The groups, including youth, educational and peace organisations, said in a joint statement posted on Twitter that the entire trial process of the reporters was completely manipulated.
