U.S., Pakistan governments urged to allow mango shipment by sea

Karachi: Mangoes exporters urged United States and Pakistan governments to allow commercial mango consignments shipment by sea from Pakistan to U.S. to make it profitable.

CEO Harvest Tradings Ahmad Jawad says shipment by air is expensive costing about Rs 290 per kilo and by sea cost exporters only Rs 25 per kilo making mangoes exports more profitable. Around 60 tons Pakistani mangoes will be exported to U.S. this which will not be big marketing.

He said U.S. importers are concerned on financial feasibility to sell Pakistani mangoes as due to high price they may not be able get much of market except Pakistanis. Shipping, handling costs come to about $22 for two kg carton. Unless U.S. Department of Agriculture is given more options of shipping and irradiation destinations to bring down cost, facilitate importers in view of high cost by air, Pakistani mangoes will remain beyond reach of people in that country.
