Timely disposal of garbage from all parts of Karachi pivotal for making city clean and green: Governor Sindh

Karachi, February 02, 2016 (PPI-OT): Governor Sindh, Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan has said that timely disposal of garbage from all parts of Karachi was pivotal for making the city clean and green. This he observed while presiding over a meeting of Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) here at Governor House on Tuesday.

Sindh Minister for Local Government, Jam Khan Shoro, Advisor to Chief Minister for Law, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Principal Secretary to Governor Sindh Muhammad Hussain Syed, Managing Director- SSWMB, Roshan Ali Shaikh, Commissioner of Karachi, Syed Asif Hyder Shah, Deputy Commissioners and Administrators of various districts of Karachi, officers of Local Government Department KMC and DMCs also attended the meeting.

Governor Sindh further said that DMCs should continue their responsibility of lifting of garbage from their jurisdiction and all human resources and machinery should be utilised in this regard. The shortage of manpower and machinery should not be an excuse for not lifting the same, he added and said that if up to 80 percent of garbage is lifted from city visible change could be witnessed with regards to overall cleanliness situation of our mega city.

Dr Ebad said that door to door garbage collection and lifting of the same from city roads are two different tasks and as such separate strategy should be evolved for both. Timely transportation of waste to landfill sites was the most important part of any cleanliness drive as the presence of the same not only contaminating the environment but also spreading various diseases, he opined.

He also directed for speeding up the project for construction of Garbage Transfer Stations (GTS) and urged the DMCs to compile authentic figures of total garbage produced and lifted so as to have a clear picture of the gap between them. This would enable the Government to earmark adequate funds in this regard, he added.

The Governor observed that the Board should have been made functional till now to achieve the purpose of its creation, which was to improve overall cleanliness portfolio of Karachi. Efforts in this regard should be accelerated and hurdles may be brought to his notice immediately to resolve the same, he added.

He directed for close cooperation between the all DMCs and other bodies involved in solid waste lifting to ensure better results in this regard. Minister Local Government informed the Governor Sindh that directives have been issued to DMCs to improve the overall situation through rigorous and concentrated efforts.

He said that it was our collective responsibility to ensure green and clean Karachi. MD SSWMB Roshan Ali Shaikh informed Governor Sindh that according to a conservative estimate 12,000 tons of solid waste is generated daily in Karachi which is expected to increase to 16000 tons daily by year 2020.

As many as 13 foreign companies including two state owned Chinese companies have shown interest in garbage lifting from Karachi. After completion of this project 300 to 400 MW electricity would be generated, he added. He said that presently only 27 percent of produced garbage is recycled which should be increased.
