Tihar jail authorities denying medical care to Altaf Shah

Delhi, February 02, 2019 (PPI-OT): The health condition of illegally detained
Kashmiri Hurriyat leader, Altaf Ahmed Shah, is deteriorating in New Delhi’s
Tihar Jail due to denial of proper medical care to him. The family members of
the incarcerated leader have said that despite court orders, the jail
authorities were not letting him to go for a proper medical check-up.

Shah, daughter of Altaf Ahmed Shah, in a statement to media said, “My father is
a diabetic patient and is hypertensive. Around three months ago, a cyst had
developed on his feet. If an immediate medical procedure is not done then it
may lead to serious implications resulting in permanent damage.”

She said
that the court had given permission to her father to go for a medical check-up
but the jail authorities kept delaying it. “We wanted to get him checked at the
All India Institute of Medical Sciences but now they have taken him to some
local hospital. He needs to be checked by an endocrinologist,” she added.

said another Hurriyat leader lodged in Tihar Jail, Peer Saifullah, had recently
fallen in the jail washroom. “He has a brain tumour. The least the court can do
is grant an interim bail to the inmates who are suffering like this,” she said
adding that the court proceedings in the cases of Hurriyat leaders were
unnecessarily being delayed by the authorities. India’s notorious National
Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested several Hurriyat leaders including
Altaf Ahmed Shah in July 2017 in a fake case. They are presently lodged in
Tihar Jail.
