Thar Coal much needed to overcome nightmarish load shedding

Karachi: Giving a ray of light in times of intense load shedding, CM Sindh Qaim Ali Shah said government intends to speed up the pace of work regarding power generation from coal reserves in the area of Thar.

He said this while presiding over the 12th meeting of Thar Coal & Energy Board on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by Federal Finance Minister Hafeez Shaikh, Federal Minister for Water & Power Naveed Qamar, Minister Revenue Jam Mehtab Dahar and others.

The CM said President Asif Zardari and PM Gilani have laid emphasis on the Thar Coal Project which, besides solving electricity problems of the country, will create many jobs.

Thar Coal & Energy Board was given a presentation by Zubair Motiwala who is Convener of the Evaluation Committee regarding International Competitive Bidding for Thar Coal Blocks, which was constituted in the board’s last meeting.

The convener of the committee explained the Evaluation Process and highlighted the proposals of the companies – based on financial strength, mining capabilities and project timelines; the board on the basis of recommendations of the committee allocated the Blocks offered for bidding to various local and international bidding companies.

The Thar board was also given update on infrastructure development projects including water supply scheme of Makhi-Farash, Transmission Network, Railway Link, etc.

Finance Minister Hafeez Shaikh assured all possible financial assistance to crystallize the Thar Coal Project.

The board was also given presentation by M/s Ernst & Young, the international consultant engaged by TCEB, on proposed Royalty Model for large scale coal mining.
