Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority launches research Journal to strengthen intellectual relations between industry and academia

Lahore, February 18, 2016 (PPI-OT): The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has launched a Research Journal to strengthen intellectual relations between industry and academia. The Lunching ceremony held at SMEDA head office today was addressed by Mr. Muhammad Alamgir Chaudhry, CEO SMEDA, Mr. Hassan Suhaib Murad, Rector, University of Management and Technology (UMT) and Mr. Mairaj Anees Ariff GM Policy and Planning Division of SMEDA.

A number of the other senior officials from SMEDA and UMT were also present on this occasion.

CEO SMEDA Mr. Muhammad Alamgir Chaudhry, highlighting the significance of industry-academia linkages for SMEs promotion, said that SMEDA will continue its efforts to strengthen Industry Academia Linkages to promote innovation, research and entrepreneurship development in the country. He stressed upon the need to promote research culture to highlight issues and constraints faced by SMEs in order to seek attention of the Government, Policy Makers and Development partners. For the purpose, in near future SMEDA is also planning to organize the 1st National SME Conference to showcase SME specific research undertaken by scholars, academic institutions and international development agencies sharing experience of SME support projects being implemented by various institutions across Pakistan, he added.

CEO SMEDA said, the SMEs usually fail to attain the attention of policy makers and key government stakeholders due to lack of quantifiable research and concrete data availability, due to which the analysis and impact assessment of policy interventions for SME development is also difficult to ascertain, he added

To bridge this gap, SMEDA has taken initiatives through promoting SME related research and has various publications including, SMEDA Research Report Series, SME Observer, Sector/ Cluster Reports, Investment Guides, SME Baseline Survey 2009, SME Genesis, Challenges and Prospects etc, CEO SMEDA said adding that a step further in this regard is the publication of SMEDA Research Journal, which is a unique publication as it purely contains scholarly research papers highlighting state of SMEs in Pakistan. He informed that the Editorial Advisory Board of the Research Journal consisted of renowned International Scholars hailing from Hungary, Turkey, Canada and UAE and National Scholars.

Dr. Hasan Sohaib Murad, Rector UMT, during his address, emphasized upon the need to establish Industry academia linkages not only at local level but also at regional and global level. He further added that the linkages with international academic institutions, scholars and researcher might be beneficial for developing international level competitiveness of local economy. At the occasion, he appreciated SMEDA’s efforts for promoting SME specific research in collaboration with UMT.
