Sindh Government taking effective steps to curb early marriages: Secretary

Thatta, April 24, 2015 (PPI-OT): The Provincial Secretary for Women Development Department Abdul Rasheed Solangi has said that Sindh Government and Women Development Department is taking effective steps to curb on the practice of early child marriages throughout province. In this regard Sindh Assembly unanimously passed “Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act 2013” on 28th April 2014 so that the practice of child marriages would be stopped by implementing on the act.

District monitoring committees will be setup in every district of Province of Sindh to ensure implementation of child Marriage Act 2013, he added. This he said while addressing in the training workshop regarding “Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act 2013” held at Darbar Hall Makli for providing awareness about the adverse effect of early child marriages. The training workshop was attended by the officers of the District Administration, Police, Lawyers, representatives of the NGO’s and others.

The Provincial Secretary said that marriage laws of 1929 has been replaced by new laws which enhanced the marriage age from 16 to 18 years and violation in this regard is punishable for 2 to 3 years rigorous imprisonment with fine.

Mr. Abdul Rasheed Solangi said that the District Women Development Officer will be Secretary of Monitoring Committee in every district while Deputy Commissioner will be its Chairman. He further said that District Women Development Officer will lodge F.I.R. at police station for violation of marriage laws. He stressed on participants to spread awareness about the adverse of the early child marriages and knowledge regarding Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act 2013 among the masses.

On this occasion the Deputy Secretary for women development department has also delivered his speech about the pro and cons, effects and disadvantages of early child marriages in detail and she also urged to spread the awareness campaign regarding to control such marriages as well as about the implementation of Act. On this occasion Director Women Development Department thanked to District Administration Thatta and participants for attending the meeting.
