Sedition charges against JNUSU President, SAR Gilani flayed

Srinagar, February 14, 2016 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, Hurriyet leaders and civil society members, today, condemned the arrest of President of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) under sedition charges over holding of a function on the martyrdom anniversary of Muhammad Afzal Guru.

The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik in a statement issued in Srinagar condemned the sedition charges against students and teachers of JNU terming it as a glaring act of undemocratic attitude of Indian rulers and growing intolerance in India.“Suppressing the voices of dissent especially those of Kashmiris for the last many years is the worst kind of dictatorship,” he added.

Nayeem Ahmad Khan in a statement issued in Srinagar said that the action was totally against the democratic claims of India and against the freedom of expression. This type of reaction against peaceful events is illegal and has no constitutional justification; he said and demanded immediate release of the students.

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association at its meeting held in Srinagar strongly condemned the arrest JNU Students’ Union President, Kanhaya Kumar and registration of case against SAR Gilani under sedition charges. “They have falsely been booked. Neither holding of a peaceful protest to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir is a crime nor can raising of slogans hailing Afzal Guru invite any criminal action against anyone”, the participants of the meeting said.
