Secretaries General of the Chambers and Trade Associations meet

Lahore, April 13, 2015 (PPI-OT): Two-day 7th All Pakistan Secretary General’s Conference has been started here at a local hotel on Monday. Secretaries General of the Chambers and Trade Associations met here under the auspices of CIPE and discussed various capacity and net-working related issues.

The opening remarks were given by the Deputy Country Director CIPE Hammad Siddique who spoke at length on the role of trade bodies for the economic well-being. He stressed the need for capacity building of the Chambers and trade associations to achieve the goal of progress and prosperity.

He said that this was the seventh conference wherein the participants were given awareness about their role in their respective institutions. He expressed the optimism that after the conclusion of the conference, the participants would be well equipped to face the upcoming challenges.

Huzaifa Shabbir Hussain threw light on his experience of working with small chambers of commerce and industry and brought to the limelight the weaknesses in their working and gave quite a few very valuable suggestions.

The Secretary General Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry Majid Shabbir spoke on DGTO compliance, membership, election and day to day issues.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary General of the Lahore Shahid Khalil said that the role of trade associations, chambers of commerce, large corporations and the business groups in the economic development has become an important area of research.

He said that the productivity, importance and the role of the local chambers and the trade specific associations is a must for economic stability of the country.

Giving a detailed briefing on LCCI role in policy making, Mian Tariq Misbah said that the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry is playing its due role for promotion of trade and industry in the country.

He said that the LCCI has more than 100 sector-specific Standing Committees. These committees collect private sector feedback, analyze and after a thorough debate it is forwarded to the concerned government departments for consideration at the time of preparation of the Federal Budget. He said that Chamber monitors the budget, anomalies are identified and these coupled with revised proposals are again communicated to the relevant policy making departments. He said that the LCCI also keeps liaison with the commercial sections of the Foreign missions and an exchange of information is ensured.

He said that the LCCI is also quite conscious of its Corporate Social Responsibility. It has two self-sustaining projects; Shalimar Hospital and LABARD on its credit. The Shalimar Hospital is providing modern health facilities to the common people while LABARD is not only acting as placement body for the disabled persons of the society but also provides relevant training to the young minds in an effort to rehabilitate them.
