SAR Gilani’s arrest betrays India’s dictatorial mindset: Leaders

Srinagar, February 17, 2016 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, the All Parties Hurriyet Conference Chairman (G), Syed Ali Gilani and chiefs of APHC and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik have denounced the arrest of Delhi University Professor SAR Gilani on sedition charges. Syed Ali Gilani in a statement issued in Srinagar termed the arrest of SAR Gilani as an act of muzzling the freedom of expression.

“This detention has no constitutional and legal justification. The secular and democratic claims of India are getting badly exposed with each passing day and this country is on its way to become an extremely intolerant Hindu Rashtra,” added. “Indian rulers are in a revengeful mood. They could not maintain their balance of mind and acted in a very cheap and uncivilised way,” maintained.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in his statement termed SAR Gilani’s arrest as uncalled for and against the democratic norms. “The arrest and crackdown on the varsity, which is an intellectual hub in Delhi, is a dictatorial attitude of the Indian government and against all democratic norms,” Mirwaiz added.

Muhammad Yasin Malik dubbed life threat to Syed Ali Gilani by underworld Don Rajiv Pujari and arrest of Professor SAR Gilani as acts of intimidation for Kashmiris. Malik who was arrested after being admitted in hospital yesterday, said, “Arresting Prof Abdul Rehman Gilani in Delhi is a glaring example of intolerant mindset of Indian rulers and speaks volumes about the mental incapacity of authorities who are hell bent upon crushing every voice of dissent.”

He said that clamping down voices of dissent by force and slapping charges like sedition on political opponents’ has been an old policy of oppressive regimes. Hurriyet leader Zafar Akbar Butt in a statement also condemned the arrest of Delhi University Professor SAR Gilani on sedition charges. Terming his detention as undemocratic and uncalled he said that by this act the secular and democratic claims of India stand exposed.
