Rice exporters seek consistent power supply

KARACHI: The Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) has requested the government for uninterrupted power supply for the rice mills, particularly in Sindh and Punjab, a statement said on Wednesday.

REAP Vice Chairman Safdar Hussain Mehkri urged the authorities to resolve the power shortage issue and assures consistent power supply to the rice industry, it said.

The rice exporters are facing tough competition in the international market, he said, adding that it is essential that the government assures smooth power supply to the rice sector.

Mehkri also said that Pakistani rice is much more accepted in the world and it is being exported to more than 100 countries.

They had set target for export of more than four million tons of rice, but due to the energy crisis, sufficient quantity of rice is not being exported, he added. The exports have suffered due to long hours power load-shedding.
