Punjab Chief Minister gives approval to setting up of Punjab Road Safety Authority

Lahore, December 21, 2016 (PPI-OT):Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif presided over a high level meeting here today which gave approval to setting up of Punjab Road Safety Authority. Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister said that Punjab Road Safety Authority is being established for safety on roads. He said that draft of Punjab Road Safety Authority has been prepared and speedy progress is needed for its establishment.

He said that setting up of the authority is the need of the hour. He said that in the first phase Road Safety Project will be launched in Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad. He said that road safety can be ensured through fitness of vehicles, training of drivers and improvement in licensing system. The Chief Minister directed that steps should be taken expeditiously for the setting up of Punjab Road Safety Authority and all concerned departments should work in a coordinated manner.

He said that road safety system should be implemented with efficiency and speed. He directed that the programme for expansion of inspection system of vehicles should be implemented vigorously. He said that setting up of Vehicles Inspection and Certification System (VICS) should be completed within stipulated period. Swedish expert Fedrik Gustafsson gave a detail briefing on improvement of road safety system. Advisor Dr. Omer Saif, Chief Secretary, Secretary Communication and Works, Secretary Law, Secretary Transport and other senior officials attended the meeting whereas Chairman Planning and Development participated in the meeting through video link.
