Prime Minister inaugurates Rs100 billion Mangla Dam raising project

Mangla: Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani inaugurating Rs 100 billion Mangla Dam raising project Thursday said it was vital for economic development as it will have 2.88 million acre feet MAF additional water storage and 644Gwh additional hydel generation with estimated annual benefit of Rs 18 billion.

Gilani said in past 35 years no such project for water storage was implemented. He lauded government and private sector for completing raising project and thanked China International Water & Power Electric Company for its completion which was contribution to greener Pakistan.

Being agriculture country, it was vital to increase cultivated land to ensure food security. He said it was important to ensure better utilizing agriculture water by brick-lining of water courses and called for utilization of drip irrigation, sprinklers to maximize usage of limited water.

Gilani said government will soon launch Diamir Bhasha Dam which will store 6 million MAF water and produce 4500MW electricity. “We launched water storage projects on smaller water courses, rivers to ensure irrigation water in far-flung areas.”

He said his government has will to confront all challenges and proved by its deeds they were sincere in serving people. “I could challenge development pace during present government out-paces any progress made by any other government in past. I directed that projects that completed up to 60% under PSDP be completed on priority basis. Certain sections were in habit of making tall claims, but there was nothing to prove it.”

Water & Power Minister Syed Naveed Qamar recalled that PPP founder Z A Bhutto had honour of initiating Mangla Dam Project. He regretted previous governments ignored power generation that led to current crisis where demand has exceeded generation capacity. Kashmir Affairs Minister Manzoor Wattoo said Governments of Pakistan & AJK worked hard to materialize Mangla Dam raising project of national importance.
