Lahore, May 14, 2012 (PPI-OT): The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Institute of Continuing Education and Extension (ICE and E) launched a special Livestock Assistant Diploma course for girl students from South Punjab on its Ravi Campus Pattoki on Monday. Director ICE and E Prof Dr Muhammad Mushtaq inaugurated the class, which has been started with the collaboration of the Punjab Economic Opportunities Program (PEOP) of the Punjab government.

The PEOP is funding this program and also providing scholarships to all these students. The students of this class have been selected by the PEOP from various districts of south Punjab, including Muzaffargarh, Bahawalpur, Lodhran and Bahawalnagar.

Addressing the students, Dr Mushtaq said that livestock had great potential to grow and it was the only sector which could help alleviate poverty in the country. He informed the students that the livestock was contributing over 53 per cent to the agriculture GDP and over 12 per cent to the national GDP.

He remarked that the UVAS was playing a key role in development of the livestock sector by producing and training the human capital in this fast-growing sector of Pakistan. Dr Mushtaq advised the students to devote all their energies to their studies and make full use of the facilities available on the campus for their education and training.

He told the students that given the social fabric of the country women were already playing a vital role in livestock development and there were vast opportunities for them if they successfully pass out from the UVAS. Dr Tayyab Muneer Akhtar, a senior teacher of the ICE and E, briefed the students about the class workload, attendance requirements, periodical tests and discipline rules.
