PPI Original Text (PPI-OT) – Trade body demands end of loadshedding

Lahore, May 08, 2012 (PPI-OT): Chairman PIAF Engr Sohail Lashari has demanded of the government to take measures on war footing to end the unprecedented load shedding as more than 14 hours power outages have crippled both trade and industry, particularly in Punjab.

While talking to a delegation of Lahore Township Industrial Area (LTIA), Chairman PITAF said that cheaper and uninterrupted power supply is only way to achieve economic targets set for the year 2012 but government is not paying heed to the difficulties being faced by the trade and industry due to unavailability of electricity.

He said that government should understand that unemployment, price-hikes, industrial closures always give birth to lawlessness and anarchy. Therefore, government should understand the ground realities and take measures to make the situation better.

He said that despite massive repeated increases in electricity tariff in last months the government had failed to overcome the electricity shortage.

He said business community was surprised that instead of taking measures to control electricity theft and enhance cheap power generation up to capacity, the policies are being evolved to add to the miseries of the business doing people.

He said that industrial sector was passing through a critical time of its history. A large number of industrial units had already closed down their operations due to acute energy shortage. He said that situation needs corrective measures but the policy makers are doing the other way round.

He said that the industry needs a continuous supply of electricity to keep the units operational and to complete the export orders well within the given timeframe but only because of the shortage of electricity the exports are not up to the mark. Engr Sohail Lashari said that said that Pakistan had already lost a number of international markets and the proposed increase in power tariff would make the Pakistani goods uncompetitive.

He demanded of the government to stop discrimination with Punjab in electricity distribution and load shedding otherwise business community would register its strong protest as the whole industry in Punjab is on the verge of collapse.

He also urged the Chief Minister Punjab Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to ensure implementation on the declaration of energy conference and also play his due role to end the massive load shedding in Punjab.
