PPI Original Text (PPI-OT) – Pakistan Provides Shortest Route to Central Asia

Islamabad, May 17, 2012 (PPI-OT): Central Asia is a very big market for Turkey, and Pakistan provides an excellent route to reach Central Asian States, which may become viable in coming years, as the security situation improves. This was stated by Mr. Murat Mustafa Onart, Turkey’s Consul General in Karachi during a visit to the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Head Office in Karachi on May 17, 2012.

Mr. Onart was welcomed at the Federation House by FPCCI President Haji Fazal Kadir Khan Sherani, who thanked him for frequently visiting FPCCI since his posting in Pakistan. Also present on the occasion were Shiekh Shakil Ahmed Dhingra, VP-FPCCI; Mr. Amjad Rafi, Chairman Pakistan Turkey Business Council; Shiekh Imtiaz Ahmed; Mr. Nasiruddin Shiekh; and Mr. Ubaidullah Qadri.

In his welcome address, the President mentioned that Turkish firms had secured contracts worth US$192 billion in the construction sector globally, and pointed out that Pakistan could learn from Turkey’s expertise in this regard.

He said that there were tremendous opportunities for Turkish investors in textiles, leather, food processing and telecommunications in Pakistan. He also identified minerals and fruits in Baluchistan as viable investment areas for Turkish companies. In particular, he said that Baluchistan had tremendous potential for development in fruit grading, processing, packaging, and polishing.

Mr. Amjad Rafi appreciated the services of Mr. Onart and Ms. Fisun Aktug, the Commercial Counselor towards enhancing Pak-Turk trade, and appreciated the Turkish Consulate’s facilitation in ensuring quick issuance of visas.

He said that the ECO Bank and the Islamic Development Bank may be approach for financial assistance in making the Gul Train project viable. He also mentioned that Pakistani businessmen should be informed about industrial exhibitions like the Izmir Fair so that they could participate in them more actively.

Mr. Onart pointed out some shortcomings in the existing trade relations. For instance, there was no direct shipping service between Pakistan and Turkey, owing to which it took goods a month to reach Istanbul from Karachi.

He also said that the possibility of opening a branch of a Turkish bank was presently under study. He expressed his satisfaction that the negotiations with regard to the PTA between Pakistan and Turkey were proceeding favorably.

The meeting was concluded with the presentation of the FPCCI Crest to Mr. Onart.
