Power, gas outage badly paralyzed surgical industry production

SIALKOT: The daily 18 to 20 hours long power outages and closure of Sui gas to the surgical industry of Sialkot has badly paralyzed the production of surgical industry, as more than 3000 surgical units in Sialkot city and its outskirts were feared to face a closure while more than 0.5 million workers directly or indirectly attached with the surgical industry were much perturbed.

Chairman Surgical Instruments Manufacturers Association of Pakistan (SIMAP) Jahangir Bajwa stated this while talking to the newsmen here on Saturday. He said that there was no let up in power outages in Sialkot, as the GEPCO has increased the duration of power outages from 18 to 20 hours daily he said that the power outages and Sui gas non availability have crippled the surgical industry of Sialkot-Pakistan.

He said that the severe energy crisis aggregating day by day in Sialkot, which were resulting into the termination of the thousands of the daily-waged industrial workers, due to which their families were unable to run the household activities, as they were meeting the both ends very hard.

Chairman SIMAP said that production capacity of Sialkot’s surgical industry has almost ended. He said that the surgical exporters were unable to timely dispatch their export consignments top their foreign destinations due to energy cancel and their foreign buyers were cancelling their import orders placed to Sialkot based exporters (worth millions of dollars), in this regard.

Jahangir Bajwa narrated the hundreds of the small sized daily-surgical forging units were already lying closed in Sialkot, Uggoki, Daska, Sambrial and surrounding areas due to power outages. He said that the industrial wheel has been jammed due to which the production was badly halted and as a result of which, the thousands of the daily waged surgical workers and artisans have become jobless. He urged the federal government to exempt Sialkot from power load shedding following its global industrial significance or announce a schedule of load shedding for export-oriented Sialkot city.
