Pakistan to construct state of art land ports at Torkham and Chaman: Commerce Minister

Kabul, April 15, 2015 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Commerce, Engr. Khurram Dastagir Khan, said that Pakistan would construct state of the art land ports at Torkham and Chaman border so as to facilitate movement of goods and bilateral trade with Afghanistan. The minister said that Pakistan was seriously working on infrastructure development and road connectivity with Afghanistan which would tremendously help in promoting economic integration between the two countries. He expressed these views while inaugurating “Made in Pakistan Exhibition”, organized by Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industries, in Kabul today.

The Minister reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to intensify bilateral cooperation with Afghanistan in the areas of trade, culture and defence. He said that the present government of Pakistan, under the leadership of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, was keen to enhance trade relations with Afghanistan and, in this regard, the Prime Minister was encouraging Pakistani investors to invest in Afghanistan which would bring economic prosperity to both the countries.

The minister stated that Pak-Afghan Chambers of Commerce and Industries needed to take joint ventures by organizing such exhibitions in central Asian as well as other important countries of the world. He offered his ministry’s all out support to Afghan traders to facilitate them in organizing such exhibition in the major cities of Pakistan. He said that a separate Desk, for the facilitation of Afghan and Central Asian traders, had been set up in the Ministry of Commerce for Afghanistan and Central Region countries to resolve disputes related to trade.

The Minister said that significant improvement had been made in Pak-Afghan relations and its credit goes to the current leadership of the two counties. He said that Pak-Afghan relations were moving on right trajectory and tremendous progress had been made in the areas of trade as major impediments, faced by the trader community of Afghanistan, have been removed. He also indicated that both countries are working on Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA). He also emphasized the need for customs harmonization between the two countries.

Afghan Acting Minister of Commerce Mr. Muzammil Shinwari, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Syed Abrar Hussain, President of Pak-Afghan’s Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Mr. Khan Jan Alkozay, former President of Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Dr. Shumail Daud Arian, and organizer of the exhibition, Mr. Khurshid Barlas, also spoke the occasion.
