Pakistan International Airlines maintenance, repair, overhaul business gains momentum

Karachi: PIA MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) business is now in expansion phase with increase in number of customers from 14 to 40; PIA earned Rs 1.1 billion in year 2011 through MRO business while revenue set for year 2012 is Rs 1.4 billion.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMS) like Boeing Company, Airbus & General Electric have shown keen interest in PK-MRO Business, Deputy Managing Director PIA, Salim Sayani said in briefing to US Embassy in Pakistan delegation at airline’s Head Office airline press release said Wednesday.

Recognizing great potential in PIA’s MRO capabilities, US Trade & Development Agency USTDA granted PIA Rs 58 million (US$864,000) to conduct thorough feasibility for this business. Joint initiative taken underscores confidence and trust in PIA’s engineering capabilities to create state of art MRO facility in region that will generate revenue of $100 million and around 5,000 jobs in Pakistan by year 2020. South Asian & Middle East MRO Markets are expected to grow to $9 billion market.

US delegation led by William Martin Consul General Karachi visited PIA Head Office, PIA MRO and showed keen interest in its engineering capabilities Avionics Overhaul, Base Maintenance Division, Engine Shop Welding, Heat Treatment Shop, APU Test Facility, Ispahani Hanger where ‘D’ check of a Boeing 777 was in progress. They visited Precision Engineering Complex where parts are manufactured for Airbus, Boeing & General Electric, flight simulators of Boeing 747, 737 & latest flight simulator of Boeing 777 recently installed.

PIA five Year Business plan is focused on turning cost centers into revenue centers to help PIA return to profitability. With PIA Engineering capabilities and infrastructure serve as solid foundation for growth of MRO. US delegation included Richard Albright, Senior Coordinator for Economic Assistance US Embassy Islamabad, Robert Ewing, Chief Economic Affairs for Pakistan US Embassy Islamabad, Ms Rebecca Seweryn, Economic Officer, US Consulate Karachi, Fahd Zaidi, Economist, US Consulate Karachi & Reid Creedon, Chief of Staff US Embassy Islamabad. PIA MRO is in second phase of expansion to become One Stop Shop Premier MRO Service Provider in region by providing, Quality, excellent Turn Around Time, Competitive Labour Price through total Maintenance Support of domestic airlines.
