Non-Tariff Measures desk established in Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry

Islamabad, December 20, 2013 (PPI-OT): With the profound efforts of the President FPCCI Mr. Zubair Ahmed Malik an NTM Desk to help Pakistani exporters in South Asian countries has been established in the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Mr. Zubair Ahmed Malik, President FPCCI informed that many NTMs are being used to reinforce the market restrictions. The use of NTMs is against the free trade and WTO accord. NTMs include all measures, besides tariffs, which are used to protect a domestic economic activity; they may be imposed or sponsored by government. South Asia has no exemption from this practice.

The tools and types of NTMs cannot be identified unless these are observed; these are changed from time to time and varied from market to market. Though, WTO has a full-fledged dispute settlement body, majority of Pakistani exporters do not have sufficient resources to follow their cases in WTO.

Many NTMs fail to get notified in the formal review process because of inadequate representation of industry organizations in the process. Consequently such losses are accumulated in national economy. A timely identification and action is required to avoid from business losses.

He further stated that with the support of ‘German International Development Cooperation (GIZ)’ and ‘Australian Agency for International Development’, the Working Group for Regional Trade Facilitation (WG-RTF) of the SAARC Trade Promotion Network (TPN) has established an ‘NTM Desk’ in FPCCI.

The purpose of NTM-Desks is to establish a sustainable mechanism for regular monitoring and reporting of NTMs in the SAARC region, and use the information as the basis of lobbying and advocacy for reduction and elimination of NTMs in the countries and in region. This desk will be helpful in timely decision and identification of NTMs and the problems which are being faced by Pakistani exporters in South Asian countries.

President FPCCI Mr.Zubair Ahmed Malik was pleased to inform that NTM Desk in FPCCI’ will support trade and industry of Pakistan if they are facing any hurdle, friction or discriminatory attitude in exporting their products to a South Asian country. This service is free of charge and after getting response and information in near future we will a organize workshop for the potential exporters.
