No power generation unit being sold: Federal Minister

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Water & Power, Syed Naveed Qamar has categorically said that the government is not privatizing any power generation unit and power utility. He said that the impression being spread regarding privatization of public sector power entities is incorrect. Power sector reforms are being made to improve the sector and national economy.

He expressed these views while talking to the delegation of Wapda Hydro Electric Union and power generation union, who called on him led by its President Abdul Latif Nizamani and Secretary General Khursheed Ahmed here Thursday, to discuss various issues relating to Power Sector Reforms, out sourcing of management of Gencos and service structure of employees.

Sixth hours long meeting held in pleasant manner and the minister listened all their demands and reservations patiently. The meeting was also attended by Secretary and Joint Secretary Admn of the ministry. The Minister said that the interest of all the stakeholders will be protected and all the genuine demands of the workers will be considered. He said that the issues relating to service structure of the employees and officers will be considered in the meeting to be held next week.

He said that the employees of former Pepco will be given option for their posting in the new set up. He also clarified that the existing CEOs of the power distribution companies have also been allowed to compete for the post of CEOs being recruited under power sectors reforms package. The Minister said the Board of Directors of the distribution companies has been fully empowered and CEOs will be appointed by the Government on their recommendations. However, the performance will also be monitored by the Ministry of Water and Power. The Minister said that the government of Peoples Party is people friendly and always protected the rights of the workers.

He said that Pakistan Peoples Party has always opened the doors of the employment and never unemployed the people. The President and the Prime Minister have announced number of incentives for employee’s even have been given 12 % shares under Benazir Employees Stock Option Schemes in the public sector enterprises.

Talking to the matters relating to the outsourcing of operation and management of public sector generation companies, he said that the impression of privatization of the generation companies in this context is wrong. He said that the fuel will be converted into the cheaper fuel and only operation and management will be given to the private sector to improve the efficiency. The concept clearance paper will be shared with the labour union in this regard.

The Representatives of the union thanked the Minister for considering their demands and resolving their apprehensions. They stated that they are not in the favour of protests and will cooperate with the government to improve the efficiency of the power sector.
