National Assembly Standing Committee on Science and Technology meets

Islamabad, February 19, 2016 (PPI-OT):Standing Committee on Science and Technology met under the Chairmanship of Ch. Tariq Bashir Cheema, MNA to discuss the National University of Sciences and Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The Standing Committee was briefly apprised about the pros n cons of the Bill. It was informed that the National University of Sciences and Technology Act, 1997 was notified on June 10, 1997.

Initially the University was conceived as Engineering University; hence its Rector was required to have “engineering” qualifications only. Over the years, the University has expanded in scope, services and stature and emerged as a leading comprehensive University in the Public sector with the objective of giving the responsibility of the affairs of NUST to a best suited education manager in future it is important to widen the choice for selection of the Rector. It is, therefore, proposed that in section 10, in sub-section (1), for the words “engineering” qualifications and experience” the words “qualifications and experience as prescribed by the Board” shall be substituted.

MNAs, Mrs. Shamas-un-Nisa, Ms. Musarat Rafique Mahesar, Engr. Usman Khan Tarakai, Mr. Aqib Ullah Khan, Syed Muhammad Athar Hussain Shah Gilani, Makhdoom Syed Ali Hassan Gilani, Mr. Aftab Shahban Mirani, Mr. Ali Muhammad Khan, Ms. Aliya Kamran, Mr. Sajid Ahmad attended the meeting, besides officials of the Ministry.
