Mushahidullah calls for dedicated window on forests in $ 100 billion Green Climate Fund

Islamabad, May 17, 2015 (PPI-OT): “Integration of forests planning in the overall development architecture is therefore considered important for ensuring sustainability in economic growth and development”, said by Federal Minster for Climate Change, Senator Mushahidullah Khan while addressing the eleventh session of the United Nations forum on forests held on 13th-14thMay, 2015 at New York.

He further added that Pakistan recognize that UNFF is the only universal and intergovernmental forum on forests which assists in promoting policy coordination and cooperation for sustainable management of all types of forests. He highlighted that Pakistan I is taking many tangible steps for sustainable management of forests consistent with the international arrangements on forests.

‘Pakistan has achieved the target of 12% protected areas on the Millennium Development Goals on Environmental Sustainability”, Highlighted By the federal Minister. However, the target to increase the forest cover to 6% is yet to be achieved.

He clearly expressed that Pakistan has made significant efforts under UN REDD +initiative (The United Nations Program on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). The government is also promoting public private partnership to attract private sector investments in the forestry sector in Pakistan.

He pinpointed that the achievements of the global objectives of forests adopted by the UNFF and non –Legally binding Instrument on all types of forests will not be possible without adequate means of implementation.

He explicitly mentioned that Pakistan also support the establishment of Global Forest Fun d to meet the forests financing needs in the developing countries towards sustainable management of forests and achieving the agreed Global Objectives on forests. It requires dedicated window on forests in the $ 100 billion Green Climate Fund.

He also said that this very important year for all of us. We are set to adopt a transformative development agenda, agree on a financing framework for development at Addis Ababa and finalize the climate Agreement in Paris. We should give a clear message to the Paris climate Conference that REDD +should be anchored comprehensively in the 2015 Climate agreement.

The UNFF 11 session was also addressed by representatives from South Africa, Germany, Guinea, Zambia, Congo, Madagascar, Czech Republic, Malaysia, china, Slovakia, Norway, Sweden, Argentina, Philippines, Japan, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Indonesia, Turkey, France, Paraguay, Thailand, India, Papua New Guinea. The delegates discussed whether the IAF should promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests “taking into account different versions and approaches.
