Lyari to have 1,000 flats for poor people, clean drinking water soon: Sindh Chief Minister

Karachi, April 28, 2015 (PPI-OT): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has directed Local Government Department to take necessary measures to implement Lyari Development Package which include Rs1 billion uplift schemes, provision of water within three months and establishment of Bilawal Butto Engineering College in Lyari.

This he said while presiding over meeting on the development of Lyari here at CM House today. The meeting was attended by Minister for Local Government Mr Sharjeel Memon, Minister for Katchiabbadis Jawed Nagori, Principal Secretary to CM Alamuddin Bullo, Additional Chief Secretary (Development) Waseem Ahmed, Secretary Local Government Imran Atta Soomro, Secretary Special Initiative Aijaz Ali Baig, Administrator KMC Saqib Soomro, MD KWSB Qutubddin Shaikh, representatives of Lyari and others.

The chief minister said that the PPP has a very popular slogan of Roti, Kapra aur Makan. Under the manifesto of the party the PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari announced Rs1 billion Lyari package in the public meeting he addressed at kakri Ground on April 26.

He said that the Lyari package includes construction of low-cost residential apartments, establishment of Bilawal Bhutto Engineering College, provision of water within three months. “I want to implement the water supply scheme within three months as desired by party chief. Therefore, a workable and practical steps must be taken,” he said.

Minister for katchiabadi Mr Nagori said that Lyari is located in the tail of the city below the sea level. Therefore, rehabilitation of its drainage system needs to be given first priority, otherwise it would be quite difficult to save the old area in case of heavy down pour.

The chief Minister directed the minister local government Mr Sharjeel Memon to upgrade all the pumping stations suction pumps installed to extract the sewerage water from Lyari.”Meanwhile, survey of rehabilitation of the old water supply line laid during the tenure of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto be conducted. The RO Plants installed there should also be made operational. Our party chief has given three months to you and I am giving you two and half months to fulfil his promise,” he said.

The chief minister also directed the ACS (development) Mr Waseem Ahmed to prepare a scheme of Bilawal Bhutto Engineering College. On this Mr Waseem said that Rs500 million have already been allocated for the purpose. “The foundation stone of the college can be laid whenever the government decides,” he said.

On the request of Mr Javed Nagori and President PPP District South Haji Qasim the chief minister directed Minister Local Government Mr Sharjeel Memon to visit Spencer Eye hospital and restore it. “This is a historical hospital and its leading doctors have made it an institution. This institution must be given due attention, he said.

The chief minister also directed the Mr Nagori, Nadia Gabool and Haji Qasim to identify the area where 1000 apartments could be constructed for the poor people of Lyari. “This is not a task but it should be taken as a mission to provide all the basic facilities to the people of Lyari,” the chief minister said. The chief minister also directed the local government department to make RCC roads in narrow streets but this work should be done after rehabilitation of drainage system.

The chief minister said that he would not tolerate any negligence or corruption in the implementation of Lyari package. Apart from it the colleges and schools constructed in Lyari must be made functional by making their SNE in the next financial year.

The chief minister also directed the ACS (Development) to talk to the federal government to launch K-4 mega water supply scheme for Karachi city. “The funds the Sindh government has already allocated may be utilised to start the K-4. I want to lay its foundation stone by May 15, he said.
