Lord Mayor speaks high of Lahore Chamber for bringing British, Pakistani business communities closer

Lahore, June 21, 2012 (PPI-OT): The Lord Mayor Manchester Thursday spoke highly for the Lahore Chamber for bringing the UK and Pakistani business communities closer and paving way for increasing the bilateral trade and economic relations.

Ms Elaine Boyes was talking to 37-member LCCI delegation, led by LCCI President Irfan Qaiser Sheikh, currently visiting United Kingdom on the second leg of its two country visit.

The other members of the delegation includes: LCCI former Senior Vice Presidents Engineer Sohail Lashari, Tahir Javaid Malik, Executive Committee Members Khawaja Shahzeb Akram, Khawaja Khawar Rashid, Fahimur Rehman Saigol, Chaudhry Wajid Ali.

The Lord Mayor appreciated the LCCI efforts aimed at increasing Pakistan’s business community’s interaction with their global counterparts. She said that the person-to-person contacts always pave way for bilateral business and opens up new avenues.

She also lauded the role of expatriate Pakistanis in the economy of the United Kingdom. She said that there was no doubt about Pakistan is a resource rich country but it would have to take solid measures to attract foreign investment.

Speaking on the occasion, the LCCI president Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said that the LCCI delegation comprised of leading sectors of Pakistan like petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, tourism, readymade garments, artificial leather, leather and leather products, auto-parts, agriculture components, lubricants, rice, halal meat and etc. He said that these businessmen were interested to collaborate and have joint ventures with UK based companies.

The LCCI president said that the UK has significant importance in the economy of Pakistan whether it is matter of imports, exports, foreign direct investment, economic cooperation and the visit to UK aims to explore new ways to further strengthen these important ties.

Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said that in Pakistan, there are a lot of investment opportunities for UK businessmen in various sectors like telecommunications, information technology, financial services, petrochemicals, livestock, dairy, consumer goods, food processing, pharmaceuticals, minerals, and particularly in energy sectors.

He said that despite facing some tough circumstances, there are some positive indicators prevailing in Pakistan as our economy is growing at around 3.5% to 4%., our exports increased to the record level of US$ 25 billion, law and order situation has significantly improved, inflation has been checked and etc. All these positives must be considered by the UK based investors to evaluate Pakistan as a next destination for investments.

“We believe that UK is the gateway to Pakistani products to have access to EU member states. We attach great value to it that UK is Pakistan’s strongest advocate for market access to the Europe.” He said that the exchange of trade delegations between the two countries can prove to be an effective strategy for boosting the level of bilateral trade as the LCCI is keen to develop working relations with Business Support Organizations of UK and also with other public and private institutes that directly or indirectly supplement the efforts to expand economic relations.

The delegation also visited Manchester Town Hall after having a meeting with the Lord Mayor.

Earlier, the delegation also had meetings with Commercial Counsellor Mohammad Hamid Ali at Pakistan High Commission in UK and Pakistan’s Consul General in Manchester Ehsanullah Bath and also participated in a seminar at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GMCCI).
