Lahore University of Management Sciences Becomes First South Asian University in Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System

Lahore: The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has become the first University in South Asia to become a member of the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System™ (STARS®) which is administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). The program is an international rating and action program by leading universities to encourage sustainability in all aspects of higher education.

To date, nearly 230 higher education institutions have registered as STARS Participants. LUMS is proud to be one of them. Moreover, LUMS is honored to be one of only ten schools currently participating in the International Pilot Program.

This programme, for the first time, invites schools from around the world to participate in STARS. Universities from Japan, Malaysia, France, Switzerland, Chile, South Australia, England, and Mexico join LUMS in this programme. LUMS is notably the only South Asian university on the list.

Participation in STARS is a continuation of the recently launched SarSubz (“always green”) initiative, a representation of longstanding sustainability efforts at LUMS.

“STARS is an excellent opportunity for us to showcase all the exciting things we have going here at LUMS. It will be an honest representation of things we’re doing well, and even things we need to improve on”, said Dr. Najam, LUMS VC.

AASHE’s STARS program is the only one of its kind that involves publicly reporting comprehensive information related to a college or university’s sustainability performance. Participants report achievements in three overall areas: 1) education and research, 2) operations, and 3) planning, administration and engagement.

“The advantage of STARS is that institutions can earn credits for all of their contributions to sustainability,” said AASHE Executive Director, Paul Rowland. “From providing sustainability coursework, to using green cleaning products, to energy efficiency in campus buildings, there are lots of opportunities for a school to identify and track its sustainability progress.”

Unlike other rating or ranking systems, this programme is open to all institutions of higher education in the U.S., Canada, and now internationally. The criteria that determine a STARS rating are transparent and accessible to anyone. Because STARS is a programme based on credits earned, it allows for both internal comparisons as well as comparisons with similar institutions.

“Participating in STARS demonstrates our serious commitment to these issues,” Dr. Najam went on to say, “and our aim to be a leader in sustainability.”
