Lahore Stock Exchange conducts Investors Awareness Program

Lahore, May 09, 2014 (PPI-OT): A large number of general investors participated in the Investors Awareness Program organized by the Corporate Communication Department of Lahore Stock Exchange Limited. Based on the fact that general public lacks knowledge of stock market and even existing investors are also not fully aware about their rights and responsibilities, the LSE has taken an initiative to educate investors at large.

In this regard, a nation-wide campaign has been kicked-off to increase level of knowledge in the best interest of the investors and for growth of the capital market. Mr. Mujahid Nadeem, Head of Operations of LSE gave a detailed presentation on the measures taken by SECP, LSE, CDCPL and NCCPL for protection of the investors.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mujahid explained the rights and responsibilities of the investors pertaining to brokers and listed companies as provided in the different jurisdictions like Companies Ordinance, SECP Act, CDC, NCCPL and Regulations of the Stock Exchanges.

He highlighted that LSE is the pioneer in introducing most of the reforms and innovations that have resulted in the improved trading environment we see today. Lahore Stock Exchange is proactively working to secure the capital of the investors injected in the stock business.

He also explained that the investor’s related services provided by LSE which include revamping of LSE Website, Investors Education Program, SMS alerts for trade confirmation to clients, establishment of Investors Relation Department etc. Investors are also informed that at the time of making investment decision in the capital market, they should acquire proper knowledge, information and experience regarding different aspects and matters of capital market.

Talking about major reasons of dispute between investors and brokers are non-receipt of shares, order confirmation, ledger report, payment and unauthorized trading in their accounts; he said that such situation occurs mostly due to lack of knowledge and unawareness of capital market on part of investors.

He stressed that investors should remain more vigilant about their investment portfolio and should be very clear that the gain or loss, whichever comes from the investment, it belongs to investors. So, well-thought of investment decision based on knowledge and fundamentals of the securities may be real assistance to the investors.

The participants of the session are also advised to avoid heeding on rumours at the time of trading shares; it may cause loss to the believers. Even spreading rumour is legally prohibited. It is the responsibility of investors to verify the market information or report to exchange for its authenticity. The investors should take advantage of the measures and services provided by different entities like stock exchanges, CDCPL and NCCPL.

In a message, Mr. Aftab Ahmed Ch., CEO, Lahore Stock Exchange Limited said that LSE would continue its utmost efforts to educate the investors of the region by holding awareness sessions at different locations across the country from time to time.

It is unfortunate for us that existing investors in stock market are not well-aware about their rights and responsibilities. The lack of knowledge will ultimately unsecure their capital and loss generated by their own negligence will sweep their even principle amount.

We feel that there is dire need to keep informed the existing investors in relation to their obligations, rights and responsibilities in their best interest and for protection of their investment in stock market. We appreciate if the investors join their hands with us for improvement in the existing system. The investors will be required to convey us their queries and problems if facing in stock business. Investors Education Program aims “Education for every investor.”

At the end of presentation, a marathon session of Questions and Answer was conducted wherein Mr. Ameer Taimoor Khan, CRO and Mr. Mujahid Nadeem addressed the queries of the participants. The investors were of the view that contents of the Account Opening Form should be in multi language for their understating and there should be a controlling mechanism put in place to protect their cash balances deposited with the brokers.

The investors also pointed out that listed companies should inform directly to its shareholder for any abnormal activity and change on part of the company. They also raised their serious concern over the freezing of shares of companies in liquidation and suspension of trading in different companies which has been restricted for trading in extended period of time by the exchanges.

In such scenario the shareholders of such companies whose investment is blocked, are affected badly. The investors appreciated the initiatives taken by LSE for protection of the investors of capital market.
