Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on a 6-day visit to India

Lahore, August 28, 2012 (PPI-OT): The LCCI delegation, that is on a 6-day visit to India, had a number of fruitful meetings with their Indian counterparts and visited various industrial units including Khanna Paper Mill. The LCCI former Senior Vice President Engr. Sohail Lashari is leading the delegation while Khamis Saeed Butt is the deputy leader of the delegation.

Engr. Sohail Lashari and Khamis Saeed Butt during their meetings with Indian counterparts, expressed his dismay over the low volume of trade between India and Pakistan. They said that India and Pakistan should promote regional trade on the pattern of ASEAN, EU, NAFTA, etc. to boost bilateral trade.

They said that the promotion of trade is the only way to minimize the political tension in the region. The two neighboring countries should not mix trade with politics and business community should be allowed to carry on trade without hurdles.

“If we would have strong trade relations the political relations would get better automatically”, they said. They stressed the need for promoting border trade particularly through land routes which is in favour of both the countries.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Suneet Kochhar, Director, Khanna Paper Mills Ltd said that LCCI has been quite active in taking up matters of Trade and Industry with the Govt of Pakistan.

He said India and Pakistan share the same tryst with destiny, History and Culture. Together accounts for roughly 80% of the GDP of South Asian association for regional Cooperation (SAARC )countries.

Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India estimates that Indo-Pak bilateral Trade Potential is worth US$ 10 billion.

He said that trade between Pakistan and India is 4.5 % where as with in northern American border countries their trade amongst themselves is 63% and with in ASEAN countries it is 31%. There is a huge Gap, where in both the countries are losing on opportunities of better trade.

He said that both countries should ease visa restriction to take the bilateral trade to the new heights.
