‘Kashmiris challenging world’s 2nd largest military power’

Srinagar, December 03, 2016 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of Hurriyet forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said that the biggest achievement of the ongoing uprising is that there is one leadership, one slogan and one goal.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq addressing a public gathering in Srinagar said that the five-month long uprising raised the morale of people to an extent that Kashmiris put everything at stake and openly challenged world’s second largest military power with a message to resolve the Kashmir dispute. He said that the people of Kashmir showed not only to New Delhi but to entire world that nothing could break their resolve.

The Mirwaiz said that sacrifices rendered by the Kashmiri people had no parallel in the world. “Only a nation which has a deep commitment, resilience, determination and courage can sustain this kind of struggle,” he said. He said, it is not easy to challenge a country like India. “The past five months helped people of all walks of life across Kashmir to come under one umbrella. There was a clear message to New Delhi that it has to resolve Kashmir no matter how brute oppression it resorts to,” he maintained.

The forum Chairman said that a transition from short-term agitation to long-term initiatives, programmes and sustainable modes of protest had to be made. He said that the joint resistance leadership was currently working on innovative means of protest. “The road ahead has got cleared and we have moved closer to our goal. We now have to consolidate our gains,” he stated.

The Hurriyet leader said that New Delhi had deployed over seven lac troops and imposed draconian laws like Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Public Safety Act (PSA) in occupied Kashmir to suppress the people. The Indian authorities have exhausted all resources to break the will of Kashmiri people, who emerged strong despite facing all kinds of oppression, he maintained.

Praising the role of youth in the ongoing uprising, he said that the youth despite facing the worst form of torture and oppression continued to remain steadfast. “Our youth are our strength. They have to shoulder bigger responsibility and take the ongoing movement forward. Out of the 100 people killed by Indian forces during the uprising, most were youth. We will not allow their sacrifices go waste. The struggle will continue till complete success,” he added.

He also welcomed the recent remarks of the US President-elect, Donald Trump, regarding Kashmir and hoped that he will use his good office and impress upon India to take steps towards settling the dispute according to the Kashmiris’ aspirations. He also thanked Pakistan for remaining at the back of people of Kashmir all the time.
