Kashmiri professor SAR Gilani arrested in Delhi

New Delhi, February 16, 2016 (PPI-OT): Delhi Police arrested Kashmiri intellectual and lecturer of Delhi University, Syed Abdul Rehman Gilani for questioning on Monday evening in connection with an event at Press Club of India in which slogans were shouted in favour of Kashmiri martyr, Muhammad Afzal Guru, on his martyrdom anniversary on 9th February. DCP New Delhi, Jatin Narwal told media men that SAR Gilani was taken from his residence to Parliament police station for questioning.

SAR Gilani had spoken at the function held in Press Club of India to commemorate the martyrdom anniversaries of Muhammad Afzal Guru and Muhammad Maqbool Butt. He was charged with sedition after Hindu extremists demanded action against him. The participants in the function shouted slogans in favour of Afzal Guru who was illegally hanged to death in infamous India’s Tihar Jail Delhi and demanded justice for his family.

The SAR Gilani’s arrest was made on the day when a group of lawyers assaulted students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as well as some journalists at the Patiala House court. The violence broke out in the court as JNU Students Union President, Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested under sedition charges, was to be brought for a hearing. Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested in connection with an event held at the JNU on the martyrdom anniversary of Muhammad Afzal Guru.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of All Parties Conference, Syed Ali Gilani in a statement issued in New Delhi denounced arrest of SAR Gilani and JNU Students Union President, Kanhaiya Kumar, by Delhi police. He said that the arrests had no legal justification and were against the freedom of speech. The octogenarian leader also denounced action by Indian paramilitary CRPF to throw a young student from a building in Islamabad town of occupied Kashmir.

The Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement in a statement strongly condemned the arrest of Professor Gilani by Delhi police and continued house detention of the party Chairman, Zafar Akbar Butt and other liberation leaders.

On the other hand, leaders of Dal Khalsa, a Sikh organization, including Kanwar Pal Singh and Dr Manjinder Singh along with human rights activist, Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema, in a statement in Hoshiarpur city of Indian Punjab strongly condemned the arrest of Professor SAR Gilani under sedition charges. They termed the arrest as undemocratic, unjust and uncalled for. Calling Prof Geelani as a friend of Sikhs, they said, he is being targeted because while sitting in New Delhi, he strongly speaks in favour of Kashmir cause and also sympathize with other struggling minorities and oppressed people.
