Kashmiri detainees traumatized, tortured in jail: Malik

Srinagar, October 02, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Muhammad Yasin Malik, has said that the illegally detained Kashmiris languishing in different jails of India and the occupied territory are being traumatised, tortured and humiliated by the jail authorities. Muhammad Yasin Malik in a statement issued in Srinagar said that the jails had been turned into torture centres where respect for life and human dignity stood at its lowest.

He said that the judicial remand of three ailing women leaders, Aasiya Andrabi, Naheeda Nasreen and Fehmeeda Sofi, who were languishing in New Delhi’s infamous Tihar jail, had been extended by thirty more days. “The proceeding of the case is being done through video conferencing and height of the apathy is that despite being ill, these inmates are not being provided with any sort of medical aid,” he said.

Similarly, he said, JKLF leaders and activists including Nazir Ahmed Sheikh, Sirajuddin Mir, Zahoor Ahmed Butt, Abdul Rasheed Magloo, Assadullah Sheikh and Ghulam Nabi Kashmiri, illegally detained in different jails of Jammu under draconian law, Public Safety Act, are also being denied proper medical care.

Yasin Malik said that many young boys facing concocted trail in DySp lynching case were also facing this apathy as police and authorities were using every method to prolong their detention and inflict more harm and pain to them and their families.

The JKLF Chairman said that the Kashmiri detainees were facing the worst kind of atrocities in jails. He said that India being a signatory to the Geneva Convention on prisoners was supposed to adhere to the international law but contrary to this, it was employing every oppressive method to subject these detainees to atrocities. Yasin Malik urged the international community, human rights organizations and civil society to fulfill their responsibilities to safeguard the rights of the Kashmiri prisoners and play role in their release.
