JNU students, journalists attacked in Delhi

New Delhi, February 16, 2016 (PPI-OT): Lawyers assaulted students and journalists at the Patiala House in New Delhi just before Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union President, Kanihiya Kumar, arrested on sedition charges, was to be brought there. Scuffles broke out as the lawyers shouting pro-India slogans ordered the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students and journalists out of the courtroom, witnesses said.

A journalist said that he was attacked by some lawyers. He said that he saw other journalists also being attacked. Some JNU students said that lawyers physically forced them out of the court premises. The JNU Students’ Union President was arrested last week in a case over holding of the event on the martyrdom anniversary of Kashmiri martyr, Muhammad Afzal Guru, at the varsity. His arrest triggered widespread outrage among students and teachers and drawn severe criticism from non-BJP political parties.
